The City of Westerville is known as “The Dry Capital of the World.” In 1859, a town ordinance was passed banning the sale of alcohol within city limits. By the 1870’s, the growing conflict between pro and anti-temperance forces came to a head and turned into what was referred to as “The Westerville Whiskey Wars.” In 1875, and then again in 1879, businessman Henry Corbin attempted to open the doors to his saloon in Westerville, and both times his business was blown up by local supporters of the non- alcohol ordinance. The reputation of this small town’s temperance was so significant that in 1909 the Anti-Saloon League moved its national headquarters from Washington, DC, to Westerville. Westerville remained dry throughout most of the 20th century.
Westerville is also the home of several well-known people including composer Ben Hanby, who penned the songs “Up on the Housetop” and “Darling Nelly Gray,” the story of an escaped slave, Joe Selby, on his way to Canada to earn money to free Nelly Gray. Hanby’s father, William Hanby, was an abolitionist and used their home as a stop on the Underground Railroad. Known today as the Hanby House, the home still stands today in the uptown Westerville area and is open to the public for tours. Businesswoman Cheryl Krueger, the founder of Cheryl & Co, a popular cookie company, headquarters her company in Westerville. Lastly, on the musical TV comedy “Glee,” Westerville is the location of a fictional private school, Dalton Academy, home to a rival choir.
