Canal Winchester was founded in 1828 through controversy by Reuben Dove. When the Ohio and Erie Canal came through his wheat field, Dove was ready to sue to the state until canal workmen convinced him to create a city that would lie conveniently in between Columbus and Lancaster. Originally it was just called Winchester after the hometown of Dove’s father in Virginia, but later was lengthened to Canal Winchester by the Ohio Secretary of State to avoid duplication of city names.
